Les Turnbull was heading north under the A1231 Sunderland Highway when John Yates, who had slowed to 4mph at the slip road leaving the A1231, pulled into his path and killed him. Turnbull had flashing lights front and rear, and Yates was unable to explain why he did not see him. He pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and was sentenced in August 2015 by Judge John Milford at Newcastle Crown Court.
