An inquest held in July 2015 heard that John Bywater was crushed under an HGV moving off from the lights, after having been observed “wobbling” at slow speed between the two lanes of waiting vehicles. The driver of the HGV had checked his mirrors before moving off but had not seen Bywater, who was then seen by witnesses to “reach out or bang the side of the lorry with an open palm as it began to move off…he may have been trying to steady himself, or panicked due to the lorry moving off and tried to alert the driver.”
Coroner André Rebello recorded a verdict of accidental death.
