Andrew Platten was killed when Akash Rashid, the driver of a Vauxhall Vectra, sped away from police. Rashid had been requested to stop after being seen in Cottingley Moor Road acting suspiciously, and was arrested at the scene of the collision on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

In January 2017 Rashid pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, driving while unlicensed, driving while uninsured and driving while unfit through drugs. When sentenced the following month, he was jailed for 9 years (reduced from 12 due to his plea) and banned from driving for eight years. In addition he was jailed for six months for intent to supply cannabis and another 6 months for an unrelated assault, to run consecutively.

As is standard procedure for events of this nature, an IPCC investigation into the incident was launched.
