Richard Pencott was murdered by Sam Spaven, whose girlfriend had left him for Pencott after complaining of Spaven’s “behaviour and mood swings”. Spaven waited for Pencott to cycle home from work and followed hime before driving his car into him. The collision occurred when Spaven’s car was travelling at around 40mph, sending Pencott through the air and throwing his bicycle over a 10ft high fence.
Judge Michael Stokes sentenced Spaven to life, with 24 years’ ineligibility for parole.
