Patrick Williams was found by a passing driver on the outskirts of Dockenfield, lying in a puddle of blood with an evident head injury. He was taken to hospital but passed away two days later.
An inquest held in September 2015 heard that Williams’ blood showed him to be twice the legal limit for driving but that there was no definitive explanation for the incident, although no evidence indicated a collision with another vehicle. It was unclear whether the cause of his apparent loss of control was primarily the road surface, his intoxication, or the proximity of another vehicle.
Coroner Andrew Bradley recorded a verdict of accidental death.
