An inquest held in June 2016 heard that Stephen Lewis was riding with a friend while on holiday and was travelling at about 26mph when he failed to negotiate “a blind bend on a steep hill”, leading him to collide head-on with a car travelling uphill in the oncoming lane.
Police noted that the road surface at the location was poor, being “worn and degraded”, but it could not be determined whether or not Lewis had hit potholes and then had to brake sharply, or whether he had simply lost adhesion to the road.
The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death.
