Robert Shaul was killed when he was struck from behind by an HGV on the A403 at Aust. The driver, Francis Hold, told an inquest that he did not see Robert, who had no lights on his bike; other witnesses also stated that Robert was difficult to see on the unlit road in the poor weather conditions. Hold heard a sound and thought he had hit an animal but did not stop, continuing to his depot and then returning with his manager to inspect the scene. Assistant coroner Dr Simon Fox recorded a verdict of death by road traffic collision.
