Joe Marchant died when he was struck by Daryl Ackland’s car in a narrow residential road in Stroud. At the time Ackland was fleeing police, who had been following as they (correctly) believed him to have no insurance. Ackland had cocaine and benzoylecgonine in his system and was found to be in possession of three cocaine wraps.
Ackland was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving without insurance. He was remanded in custody and pleaded guilty to both charges to Gloucestershire Crown Court via video link in November 2016. On 24 January 2017 he was sentenced to five years and four months in prison and was banned from driving for six years.
