The cyclist killed on Knockmore Road in Lisburn, Co Antrim has been named as Mohamed Mahfouz Balid, 47.
Balid had one year previously fled the war in Syria, joining his wife and four children who had settled in Ireland the preceding year. He was a skilled dentist and the local community had been raising funds to enable him to practice in the UK.
The dangers posed by Knockmore Road had been discussed by local politicians for some time prior to the collision. After the death of a motorcyclist on the same road late in 2014, one commenter on Facebook wrote, “Something needs to change before another fatal accident occurs.”
